K1 DEVELOPMENT – Knightsbridge, London – United Kingdom
Client: Carraig Investments SARL
Status: Design and checking under completion
The northern section of The Knightsbridge Estate, in Knightsbridge, London Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, London, includes a large retail/office complex located opposite One Hyde Park and Harvey Nichols. The existing group of buildings contains a mix of uses and previous works to the buildings have been carried out in a piecemeal fashion.
The proposed 28,000 m2 development involves the demolition of the majority of the buildings on the site, but retain all of the facades onto the main external streets and construct a new building superstructure combining reinforced concrete and steel frames. This new superstructure will be founded on rotary bored piles with secant piles to the perimeter of a three-story basement which will be used as a car park, loading bays and bike stores.
The development will be constructed on top of the current LUL Knightsbridge Underground station and adjacent to LUL assets. The LUL Piccadilly Line tunnels, between Knightsbridge and South Kensington stations, and an escalator tunnel are located underneath Brompton Road at the north of the proposed site. The Piccadilly line tunnels, escalator tunnel and Knightsbridge stations in this area are composed of cast iron tunnel linings.
At the west of the side, there are several non-public assets situated at the old Brompton Road station. This includes a walkway tunnel, two lift shafts and a stair shaft, all located underneath the proposed site.
Rendel’s scope includes the Category 3 check, using 3D FEM modelling of soil/structure interaction, of the effect of the proposed works on London Underground’s assets including tunnels and station’s escalators and lifts.
