This is a significant national transport infrastructure project estimated to be worth US$250m in construction cost. It involves the improvement of the existing road network that links Accra and the Tema Port.

The Accra-Tema Motorway, a 19km motorway section of the National Route 1 (N1), which forms part of the Trans West African Highway (Abidjan - Lagos Corridor) linking Accra and Tema, will be upgraded from four to six lanes. Pedestrian footbridges will be installed to prevent crossings at unsafe, unauthorised locations and additional slip roads added to the Ashaiman Interchange to facilitate free flow of traffic.

Urban roads widening and conversion of at-grade intersections into grade-separated junctions will also be undertaken on the existing Hospital Road (6km) and the Meridian Road (3km). Specific junctions will also be re-modelled to incorporate traffic signal control systems.

A consortium of Rendel and Ingerop, supported by local consultants, is providing engineering design services, as well as the following services:

  • Project management
  • Assistance for concession agreement
  • IFC environment/social impact studies
  • Topographical and geotechnical studies
  • Traffic analysis
  • Construction cost estimates
