We are delighted to announce that last night the HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd Colne Valley Viaduct received the British Construction and Infrastructure Award (BCIA) in the ‘Engineering Excellence’ category.

The judges commented: “Truly impressive engineering from start to finish, with rigorous design combined with innovative delivery to realise the UKs longest railway bridge. The architectural vision was realised sympathetically through outstanding engineering, including the reintroduction to the UK of internal bonded post-tensioning in precast segmental bridge construction. This was achieved through an extraordinary site-based system for manufacture, assembly and installation, using state-of-the-art casting technology and a re-used erection gantry.”

The viaduct’s design was led by Align D, a collaboration of Rendel Limited, Jacobs, Ingérop, Align JV, and Grimshaw, from tender through to scheme and detailed design. Construction was undertaken by the Align JV, comprising Bouygues Travaux Publics UK, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick, with support from subcontractors including VSL International Ltd., Kilnbridge, and KVJV, among others.
