Rendel, acting as NEC Supervisor, is pleased to be supporting the delivery of the Eternal Wall, a landmark structure being built in Coleshill near Birmingham. The project has reached an important milestone with the successful manufacture of the first precast concrete segment in Portugal.
Standing 51.5 metres tall, the striking Möbius-shaped monument will comprise 188 precast, post-tensioned concrete segments and incorporate one million bricks. Each brick will represent a story of answered prayer submitted from around the world, which visitors will be able to discover digitally. The Eternal Wall will celebrate these personal stories through a distinctive architectural landmark, visible from several of the Midlands’ major transport routes.
Rendel is drawing on its expertise in match cast and post-tensioned concrete structures to provide independent supervision and inspection of the manufacturing and construction works.
Our engineers have been working closely with the contractor at the production facility in Portugal, inspecting reinforcement cage prefabrication, formwork geometry, post-tensioning duct arrangements, concrete placement and the finished concrete segment.
The complex geometry of the structure presents engineering challenges. The segments are being manufactured using match casting, a technique that helps ensure adjoining elements fit together accurately when assembled to form the monument’s distinctive Möbius shape. Rendel’s role is to monitor and inspect the works against the specified design and quality requirements, providing assurance to the client throughout the manufacturing process.
With the segments being manufactured in Portugal for subsequent assembly in Birmingham, the project highlights the importance of international collaboration, specialist engineering expertise and effective construction supervision.
The successful completion of the first segment marks an important step towards realising this ambitious engineering landmark.
We look forward to continuing our involvement as construction progresses, including the assembly of the segments on site using a complex arrangement of temporary and permanent post-tensioning.
