Sydney Gateway Proof Engineering

Rendel’s office in Sydney, Australia has been appointed by the John Holland Seymour Whyte Joint Venture to provide proof engineering services on the major and complex bridge designs for the Sydney Gateway project.

The project comprises a number of bridges and viaducts, including twin network arch bridges over the Alexandra Canal and a 545m long viaduct over Qantas Drive to provide free-flow access to the airport. Rendel will be carrying out proof engineer checks on the permanent works of all the bridges and viaducts. In addition, Rendel will provide proof engineering services for the erection engineering and launching for the twin arch bridges.

The Sydney Gateway project is part of Transport for New South Wales’s (TfNSW) strategy to increase the capacity of the infrastructure and services in the area surrounding Sydney Airport at Mascot. Sydney Gateway will provide a new toll free connection from St Peters Interchange to the International and Domestic Terminals and beyond.  It is being delivered to improve travel times to Sydney Airport, the M5 and Eastern Distributor.

TfNSW awarded a design and construct contract for Sydney Gateway to John Holland Seymour Whyte Joint Venture in November 2020. Major construction is starting in late 2021 and the project is expected to be open to traffic in late 2024.

Virginie Lanfrey, Director of Rendel’s Sydney office said, “Sydney Gateway will form a key part of city’s transport infrastructure and we are extremely pleased to be given the opportunity to demonstrate our proof engineering capabilities on a project of this scale. We will be utilising the expertise of our Sydney team with support from Rendel’s head office in London, UK.”
