Yangon Port expansion to meet increased international trade

Rendel has been appointed by an international contractor to carry out pre-tender design services for the EPC tender for a new US$290 million container terminal at Yangon Port, Myanmar.

The new port, known as AIPT(2) will be a brand new facility in the Ahlone township on the Yangon River, and is planned in anticipation of an increase in international trade volumes in future years. It will form part of the Yangon Port cluster which also includes Asia World Port Terminal and Myanmar Industrial Port. Construction will start in September 2019, with the first phase of the development delivering a port with the capacity to handle 100,000 to 150,000, 20-foot containers. The target for completion of the first phase is within 12 months. The second phase will further increase the port’s handling capacity to 800,000 20-foot containers (TEUs). The total current capacity of Myanmar is 1.2 million TEUs but with increased GDP in the market, there is an increased requirement for larger facility.

Rendel will work closely with its client to develop an economic design, focusing on value engineering, and will undertake the tender design. Rendel will be focusing on the new 43 square metre container berth, rock bund to create stability, marine furniture and the backup yard.
