The Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) is a major transport infrastructure project that will deliver a new twin tunnel motorway connection between the M4-M5 Link at Rozelle and the Warringah Freeway at Cammeray. The project includes approximately 6.5 km of twin mined tunnels, an immersed tube tunnel crossing beneath Sydney Harbour, complex surface and underground connections, motorway operational facilities, and comprehensive life safety, traffic management and tunnel systems.
Rendel supported the tender development and design process, providing specialist maritime, civil and durability engineering expertise across a broad range of project disciplines. Our involvement included strategic optioneering, challenge engineering for the immersed tube tunnel component, and the design of the fabrication facility required for construction of the immersed tube tunnel elements. In addition, Rendel also provided marine temporary works design for Sydney Harbour facilities including barge loading and cofferdam transfer structures.
Rendel delivered tender design services for a wide range of civil infrastructure, including:

- Retaining structures and flood protection works
- Utility tunnels and underground service infrastructure
- Noise walls and sign gantries
- Cut-and-cover tunnel structures
- Dive and trough structures
- Surface and tunnel civil works
- Road pavements
In addition, Rendel developed the project-wide durability strategy, helping to define requirements for long-term asset performance and resilience in a demanding operational environment with saline water influence.
