Rendel and parent company, Ingerop, were engaged in 2015 to provide engineering design services for this US $250 million (est.) motorway project – its aim to improve the road network linking Accra and the Tema Port in Ghana.
The scope included a 19-kilometre-long motorway section of the National Route 1 (N1), which forms part of the Trans West African Highway (Abidjan – Lagos Corridor) linking Accra and Tema. Development plans included upgrading the existing highway from four to six lanes, improving travel times and the safety of road users. Pedestrian footbridges were a key design feature to prevent crossings at unsafe and unauthorised locations, and the design of additional slip roads for the Ashaiman Interchange were introduced to facilitate the free flow of traffic.
Further scope included the widening of urban roads and conversion of at-grade intersections into grade-separated junctions. These were also designed for the Hospital Road (6 kilometres) and the Meridian Road (3 kilometres) approaching Tema Port. Selected junctions were also remodelled to incorporate traffic signal control systems.
The Rendel and Ingerop consortium, supported by local consultants, provided the following engineering services:
- Project management
- Assistance with concession agreement
- IFC environment/social impact studies
- Topographical and geotechnical studies
- Traffic analysis
- Construction cost estimates
- Sourcing of construction material
- Identification of construction issues
- Design studies
- Tender/procurement support
- Haulage road design
- Bridges inventory and diagnosis
