Eurotunnel manages, maintains and operates the Channel Tunnel from Folkestone (UK) to Coquelles (France).
Shuttle trains carry passengers, commercial freight vehicles and third-party passenger and freight trains between the two countries, making it a key strategic link to continental Europe. In anticipation of further growth in shuttle traffic, Eurotunnel planned works to improve platform loading/unloading capacity, highway access from the M20 for heavy goods vehicles, a rolling motorway terminal and a direct passenger loading route.
Rendel’s team involved structures, highways, drainage, geotechnics and mechanical and electrical (M&E) disciplines. They provided support to Eurotunnel on these capacity increasing works, which included:
- Feasibility studies and conceptual designs
- Traffic modelling, site investigations and topographical surveys
- Budgeting and risk assessments
- Programming
- Preliminary and detailed design
- Construction supervision
