Sergio Vitorino is a Chartered Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in leading the design and delivery of major infrastructure projects. This includes landmark UK projects such as Crossrail, the Lower Thames Crossing, and High Speed 2, as well as international work including an immersed tube tunnel in Germany, high-speed line across the Baltic region, and port infrastructure development in Canada. Sergio is currently responsible for the independent geotechnical design verification for the Fraser River Crossing in Vancouver, comprising a new bridge and immersed tube tunnel involving complex ground conditions, demanding seismic criteria, and stringent employer technical requirements.
Sergio brings strong analytical skills and technical capability to projects involving challenging soil–structure interaction, routinely applying advanced finite element modelling using PLAXIS 2D and 3D. My design experience covers a wide range of geotechnical works, including bridge foundations, deep shafts, retaining walls, slopes, and tunnels.
He is a published author, having written technical papers on the application of the Observational Method to deep excavations in central London and on the interpretation of large‑diameter test piles using Osterberg Cell load testing.
Sergio is highly experienced in preparing and reviewing technical specifications, producing geotechnical design reports, and working within British Standards, Eurocodes, and relevant international codes. His background also includes structural engineering, with hands‑on design experience in reinforced concrete, steel, and composite structures.
