Thames Barrier Wins FIDIC Centenary Award
Rendel's long association with London's iconic Thames Barrier has been recognised with a major award from the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) - the FIDIC Centenary Award for UK Infrastructure.
The FIDIC Centenary Awards celebrate the best consulting engineering achievements of the last 100 years and were decided by an international judging panel of industry experts.
Rendel's involvement with the barrier spans 40 years, from initial studies, design and supervision of construction, to our continued involvement of inspections, assessments, investigations and provision of advice. In 1985, the company received The Queen's Award for Technological Achievement for the world's second largest moveable flood barrier, which has been referred to as “the eighth wonder of the world”.
The Thames Barrier, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2014, has been operated over 100 times since its opening, most recently for the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Pageant, and also in November 2013, when the worst tidal surge for 60 years brought floods and caused devastation on the east coast of the UK.
