This Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded Governance and Infrastructure Improvement (GII) Project was part of the City Governance Project to address the population growth in Bangladesh’s largest cities, and to provide adequate urban infrastructure to support this. The improvements were planned to enhance economic growth and improve quality of life for residents.

Rendel worked as part of a joint venture with Padeco Co. Ltd (Japan), NJS Consultants Co. Ltd (Japan), Development Design Consultants Ltd (Bangladesh) and BCL Associates (Bangladesh).

Rendel was responsible for the feasibility studies and engineering design of the infrastructure components. This included major urban roads and bypasses, stormwater drainage, flood relief canals and bridges, including elevated expressways and multispan river crossings. Rendel also carried out urban planning in five targeted cities within the feasibility study and masterplan review sub-team. In addition, Rendel delivered the infrastructure detailed design, construction supervision and monitoring of the infrastructure projects.

The consultancy period started in 2015 and was completed in 2018.
